Cities Appeal: Local Councils Need to Make Our Cities and Towns Nuclear Target Free and Urge the Australian Government to Ban Nuclear Weapons.
WILPF has always passionately supported the abolition of nuclear weapons*. WILPF Australia is actively supporting ICAN’s Cities Appeal*, a campaign of the Nobel Prize winning International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons.
Cities and towns have a crucial role to play in raising awareness and building support across Australia and the world for the United Nations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW).
The Cities Appeal calls on all Local Government Councils to officially support an end to nuclear weapons by calling on the Australian Federal Government to sign and ratify this important new treaty.
The Treaty will become part of international law in just a few months.
As at September 2020, Australia has not yet signed this treaty.
If the COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated anything, it is the need for greater international cooperation to address major threats to the health and welfare of humankind. One of the gravest threats hanging over our planet is that of nuclear weapons – and cities would be prime targets.
This threat and its catastrophic results can be removed – and that is what increasing numbers of cities and towns around Australia and the world are calling for.
Will you join us to help bring our cities and then our entire country onto the right side of humankind’s and the planet’s history?
How to help make a difference
WILPF is actively scoping different strategies for this campaign, and welcomes your involvement in the Cities Appeal.
WILPF members in Queensland and WA are meeting online, sharing ideas and approaching councils in their states to progressively build relationships and encourage endorsement of the Cities Appeal.
Let’s do this together and have Australia sign and ratify the United Nations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.
